Jumbolair Inn & Country Club, Ocala (17FL)

Sunday's "Jumbo" brunch in the country. The first Sunday of each month offers the rare opportunity to brunch at the most infamous fly-in community in Florida. Jumbolair Inn & Country Club is an exclusive aviation community (located about 8 n.m. north of Ocala). As is the exclusive community, the brunch at Jumbolair is one to also be experienced...

Our [first] visit was on super bowl Sunday, thinking it might be a bit slower than most Sundays, but en contraire, the line extended out the door and down the sidewalk.

The anticipation wanes as you enter the near full-capacity hall and you’re shuffled to the cashier’s table. Likewise, Jumbolair loses it’s elegant flavor by the production line "pay, sit, serve” operation.  You can tell they’ve been at this for a while and have found a niche in the hundred dollar hamburger market.   If it had not been for the “assembly line” feel, I would say this is probably the closest to a 6 plane fly-in destination that we’ve found in Florida.... but please, don't let my words stop you from the Jumbolair experience.

Unless you’re a group, you’re likely to get seated with strangers who quickly become acquaintances as you recount your flight (or drive) to Jumbolair.

The food is quite good, but he service was less than you’d expect at $ 25 a person (as of March 1, 2006 the price is now $30/person).  I had finished my first plate before my coffee and juice had arrived.

The bountiful selection included, among a variety of salads, fruits and vegetables, entrées such as waffles, pancakes, sausage, bacon, cooked-to-order omelets, crepes, boiled shrimp, fried shrimp, fish, chicken (in an Alfredo sauce) and some of the best roast beef I’ve ever eaten.

The desserts were likewise vast in their variety and required a banquet room size table to accommodate the multitude of mouth-watering treats.

All-in-all, it was a very enjoyable and pleasant experience. If you're flying in, be sure to go to their website for an invitation or call ahead for reservations.
